Critters

The next few pages contain our "critters" or animal effigies.  During the American Fur Trade Era these were often traded but comprised a very small part of the total trade.  They were, however, very big in early Europe prior to the age of Rome.  Here you will find critters and critter products (claws,  skulls and such).

SW Bear Fetish

This little guy is a Bear Fetish fashioned after those carved in stone by the Indians of the American Southwest.  He measures 7/8" long by 3/8" tall and is drilled through the back.

HBC Beaver Medallion

A copy of a trade medallion made and distributed by Hudson's Bay Company during the early Fur Trade Era.  This medallion is about 3/4 scale and measures 2-1/2 by 1-3/4 inches and (as near as we can tell) an exact copy of the originals.

Ringed Beaver Medallion

This is a copy of a medallion sent to us by a friend in Ohio.  We don't know anything about the origins, but have found evidence of medallions somewhat similar in various reference documents.  This medallion is 2-9/16 by 1-7/16 inches.

Flat-tailed Beaver

Typical of many effigy pieces traded during the North American Fur Trade.  Not an exact copy of any piece but rather a generalization of one of the types made during the "Trade" this piece is 2-3/8 by 1".

Small Flat-tailed Beaver

A slightly different beaver with a flat tail.  This piece also is very typical of pieces traded during the Fur Trade.  This one measures 2 by 3/4 inches.

Round-tailed Beaver

Like the flat-tailed beavers above, this piece is another version of a typical effigy trade piece.  This piece seems to have been very popular with the Native Americans in the Northeast around Hudson's Bay.  It measures 2-1/4 by 1-1/16 inches.

One of the smaller versions of Beaver Effigies.  This one measures 1-1/2 by 11/16 inches.

Celtic Boar Pin, the Celtic Boar was the sign of fercness and daring and was considered to be a "God" in old Celtic Mythology.

Buffalo Head Pendant

A frontal view of a Buffalo head.  This is a fairly small piece measuring 1 by 15/16 inches.

Buffalo Pendant

This pendant faces to the right and is 1-3/8 by 1-1/8 inches with a heavy loop at the top of the back.
